POP3 & SMTP- Outlook 2003

 

To Set-Up or change your E-Mail account
(add additional accounts) in outlook express,

Note: The purpose of this document is to assist in the minimal configuration of Microsoft Outlook /Outlook Express 5+ for use as a POP-mail client.
Not all options will be addressed. Fields not discussed in this quick reference
should be left as they are.

First, pull down on Tools and select Accounts.

Click on the Mail tab and click on:

  • Properties to change settings

  • Add to add a new account
    (mail Wizard will help you threw new settings)
    return to properties to check or modify settings

    Note: your-user-name@your-domain.com
    is the normal convention

You will see the following screen:
On the General tab, type:
your-user-name@your-domain.com
in the Mail Accounts field.
In the User Information section:

If it is not already, enter your name as you would like it to
appear on your mail headings.
It is optional to fill in the Organization field.
If you wish, you can enter an e-mail address and a Reply-to address if you want replied to mail to be delivered to another address

Click on the Servers tab.

Enter in the address of your POP3 server in the field labeled Incoming mail (POP3) if it is not already displayed. This is the server where your incoming mail is stored until you ask for it. Usually the POP3 server is everything after the '@' symbol in your e-mail address. If you are using the Darkside or Webminder server, your POP3 server is pop3.fedorowich.com
Enter in the address of your SMTP server in the field labeled Outgoing Mail (SMTP) if it is not already displayed. This is the server where your outgoing mail is sent through. If you are directly connected to the Darkside or webminder server, your SMTP server is smtp.fedorowich.com Contact administrator@webminder.com
(403-547-6691) if you have any problems.

NOTE: My Server Requires Authentication must be checked

Type in the "User Name" in the field labeled Account Name. The user name is usually everything before the '@' symbol in the e-mail address.

We recommend that you DO NOT select remember password if other people have access to your computer.
Click on the Connection tab. If you are using Microsoft Outlook, you will see the following screen:

If you are using Outlook Express, you will see the following screen instead:

If you are using Microsoft Outlook and:

If you have a direct Ethernet connection,Telus, Shaw or Cable
select Connect using my local area network (LAN).
If you dial in to an Internet Service Provider with a modem, select Connect using my phone line. In the Modem section, make sure your Internet Service Provider's Dial Up Networking Connection is selected.
If you are using Outlook Express, check the box labeled Always connect to this account using and click on the pull-down arrow.
If you have a direct Ethernet connection, select Local Area Network.
If you dial in to an Internet Service Provider with a modem, select your Internet Service Provider's Dial Up Networking Connection.

Click on the Advanced tab.

If you plan to manipulate your mail in more than one location (at home as well as in the office), you will want to select Leave messages on server at the delivery location. If Leave a copy of messages on server is not checked, all mail messages will be downloaded to your computer (normal for Your Main " Office " computer) and will not be left on the host (Server) account. Therefore your e-mail account will not become full. However, if you are checking your mail at home, the messages will not be available to you at your office (and vice versa). If this is checked, on home computer the messages will still be available or Your Main " Office " computer. Consequently, you will have to use Your Main " Office " computer to remove the messages so your e-mail account will not become full.

Click Apply and then click OK.

You are now ready to send and receive mail using Microsoft Outlook.
